Thank you for supporting the
Pay-it-Forward Fund!
During the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has not released funds that states use to pay SNAP (food assistance) benefits for November. This means Colorado is currently unable to issue the approximately $120 million of November SNAP benefits to participants until the federal government restores funding. In the five counties that make up Southwest Colorado alone, SNAP issues an average of $2.19 million in benefits to 12,000 people and 6,500 households monthly. In Montrose County, more than 2,800 households may see disruption in their SNAP benefits and face food insecurity.
The Montrose Farmers Market proudly accepts SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks year-round to increase access to high-quality fruits and vegetables for SNAP users — while also supporting small farms by expanding their customer base. In 2024 alone, the MFM facilitated over $16,800 SNAP and DUFB sales.
In response to November SNAP Benefits freeze, the Montrose Farmers Market has launched a Pay-it-Forward Fund to support our neighbors and the vendors, farmers, and ranchers who serve them. And what we saw was nothing short of incredible.
Generous donations from our community members raised over $2000 for the Pay-it-Forward Fund, allowing the MFM to continue distributing Market Bucks through November and December, that’s a huge impact!
All donations to the MFM Pay-it-Forward Fund will be distributed via Market Bucks to members of our community facing food insecurity to spend on local food at the Montrose Farmers Market (while funds last). Anyone needing food at this time, regardless of income or SNAP status, is welcome to receive these Market Bucks.
If you are in need of food, please visit the Montrose Farmers Market November 15th, December 6th, 13th, and 20th to pick up Market Bucks at the MFM Manager’s table. Please spread the word!
To help Valley Food Partnership continue meeting the needs of our local food system in times like this, please donate this giving season, every gift makes a big impact.
